Jackie Hibbard and her friend Clyde, a miniature horse, will be visiting our Park Hill and Barth locations on 02/24 to kick off our Equine Therapy Horse and Human Spirit Program.

Realizing that equine therapy is fast becoming a recognized method addressing many mental health challenges frequently experienced by older adults, we began to strategize our options for including this opportunity. We have been meeting and conversing with Jackie Hibbard, owner of Dancing Spirit Equine Facilitated Learning and Coaching, to strategize how we could partner to bring the benefits of Equine Therapy to our residents. We know that all older adults will benefit from this unique wellness opportunity but also that based on research, residents who are diagnosed with Dementia, Alzheimer’s or Cognitive Impairment will benefit greatly. Our population at SHO includes some people with these diagnoses but many more who are not yet diagnosed but suffer from many symptoms and challenges associated with aging.

The sessions will include education on how horses help humans, the emotional connection, reflective grooming, meditation, labyrinth walk and opportunity course for those who are mobile and painting on a horse activity for those using walkers and wheelchairs.

We look forward to the new experiences Jackie & Clyde will bring to our residents.
