May is Older Americans Month

Posted on: May 8th, 2012 by sho No Comments

This year’s theme “Never Too Old to Play” encourages older Americans to stay engaged, active and involved in their own lives and in their communities. SHO supports this theme and encourages our 500 residents to continue to explore, grow, learn and have fun as they age.

When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthdays. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing, however. In April of 1963, President John F. Kennedy’s meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens served as a prelude to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month.”

Thanks to President Jimmy Carter’s 1980 designation, what was once called Senior Citizens Month, is now called “Older Americans Month,” and has become a tradition.

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since JFK has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other such activities.

National Volunteer Week-We Love our Volunteers!

Posted on: April 16th, 2012 by sho No Comments

This summer will once again bring our Week of Hope student volunteers. We rely on volunteers throughout the year and we are always reaching out to other organizations who can assist us. We are excited to once again welcome the kids to help us with our summer projects. This year eight of our communities will work with the groups in Denver and Longmont.

As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization Group Cares (formerly Group Workcamps Foundation) exists to provide dynamic short-term mission trips that help children, youth, and adults connect to Jesus while serving people in Christ’s name.  Group Workcamps and Group Week of Hope are interdenominational, focusing on the core Christian beliefs that bring the Christian church together.

Since 1977, nearly a quarter of a million participants have grown in their relationship with Christ, while providing more than 6 million hours of volunteer service directly to people in need.

The Trips Purpose

Week of Hope and Workcamps are designed to deepen your walk with Christ, while you serve people in Christ’s name.  It’s not so much about the “service projects” (although the challenge is important), it’s more about God changing the lives of the people you serve…and the hearts of your students.  The “work” fades, but the impact of selfless service and new relationships lasts!  Our purpose is to come alongside youth leaders and provide experiences where young people grow in Christian faith and character…and have loads of fun at the same time.

This public-private partnership, co-led by CDC and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is integrating and amplifying a range of existing heart disease and stroke prevention programs, policies, and activities.

Week of Hope Volunteers visit Servicios

Posted on: August 4th, 2011 by sho No Comments

Numerous campers come from all over the USA to provide free service projects to nonprofit organizations. These youth volunteers come in small groups of 5-7 with a group leader for one week projects. Last summer a group came to help with new landscaping under the supervision on yet another volunteer, a Master Gardener named Julie-a friend of SHO! We couldn’t thank them enough for their hard work and enthusiasm. A pizza party was thrown to celebrate the end of the project and the residents enjoyed having the kids at the community.
