Cinnamon Park Celebrates Mardi Gras with Style

Posted on: March 2nd, 2012 by sho No Comments

Julia, a resident at Cinnamon Park shared her New Orleans hometown “secrets” of what a real “Mardi Gras’ is like. The residents made home-made jambalaya, red beans & rice, and delicious corn bread to get in the spirit of the holiday.

Mardi Gras, which in French translates to Fat Tuesday, is officially the day before Ash Wednesday. The day is also commonly referred to as Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day and can occur anytime between February 3rd and March 9th, depending on when Easter is held that particular year. But as the celebrations in America and across the world have grown larger with each passing year, Mardi Gras, has evolved from one day into week long celebrations.

For the last year, dedicated staff have been working on revising local plans to help prepare for emergencies through our SHO Emergency Operations Planning (EOP) Workgroup. Monies from our annual fundraiser last year have also helped us start to develop our resident emergency “go kits”. This is a work in progress but we are headed in the right direction.

21st Annual Winter Warmth Coat Drive

Although we have had a beautiful warm fall, winter is just around the corner. Families are already coming to the Our Center for warm clothing for their children. Because the need is great within our own community, the Annual Winter Warmth Coat Drive is organized by Longmont Rotary to encourage local donations and distribution. “Your generous donations have been greatly appreciated in the past and we are asking for your continued support as we try to meet the needs of many families in the Longmont area” said Phyllis Dwyer, one of the co-chairs of the Drive.

Gently used and clean coats, hoodies, fleece, gloves, hats, blankets, sleeping bags boots, and scarves are all needed. “Anything that will help keep someone warm will be appreciated,” she said. There is also a critical need for children’s coats.
